CBD OIL FOR SENIORS: 3 THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW Originally Posted by Green Team on December 03, 2020 Medicinal cannabis use among seniors is steadily on the rise, so it’s no surprise that CBD oil for seniors is becoming increasingly popular. Known for its anti-inflammatory and anti-anxiety properties, CBD oil is a natural, non-addictive alternative to the expensive pharmaceuticals many seniors have to shell out for every month. Plus, it can get the job done without clouding the head like some pharmaceuticals do. Extracted from hemp, which is cannabis with less than 0.3% tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), cannabidiol (CBD) is an active chemical compound known as a cannabinoid. Unlike THC (the other well-known cannabinoid), CBD is non-intoxicating and cannot get you high. You can find it available in full- or whole-spectrum oils, broad-spectrum oils, or as a CBD isolate oil. The spectrums determine how much of the plant profile was maintained during extraction. CBD on its own does offer some therapeutic benefits, but it’s not always as effective as using a full- or whole-spectrum oil. Broad-spectrum means the producer kept some of the plant’s active compounds but not all, whereas full-spectrum means all the plant’s oil-soluble compounds were harnessed during extraction, including terpenes (aromatic compounds), flavonoids (flavor and pigment compounds), and trace amounts of THC. Whole-spectrum oil takes full-spectrum one step further by also maintaining the plant’s water-soluble compounds and other phytonutrients. Again, full- and whole-spectrum CBD oils will never have enough THC to get you high. But, incorporating all of the plant’s healing compounds, including THC, creates a synergistic process within the body known as the entourage effect. Within this effect is where you can really harness the benefits of CBD oil for seniors, like helping with chronic pain, neurodegenerative diseases, and heart health. https://terryshp.com/full-spectrum-cbd-products.html CBD OIL FOR SENIORS WITH PAIN Inflammation is a major cause of both acute and chronic pain. Because CBD has anti-inflammatory properties, it can be very effective in reducing and relieving both types of pain. A 2018 study found that it does so by binding to and desensitizing receptors known to mediate pain and sensory perception, body temperature, and inflammation.[1] Small amounts of THC can also offer some pain-reducing benefits because it activates certain receptors in nerve cells, in turn reducing the sensation of pain.[2] This is a great example of the entourage effect—both CBD and THC can reduce pain, but they do it through different channels in the body, so it can be more effective to use a whole-spectrum CBD oil that contains both as opposed to using a CBD isolate. TYPES OF PAIN CBD OIL MAY HELP WITH Arthritis/joint pain: Studies are still being conducted, but one animal study did find reduced pain and inflammation in rats with arthritis after they were treated with CBD.[3] Cancer treatment pain: Research is ongoing, but multiple studies have shown CBD with THC can help reduce pain caused by cancer treatment.[4] Migraine pain: Scientists are still exploring CBD’s effects on migraines, but studies are showing that CBD along with cannabis’s other active compounds is more effective than CBD alone at treating migraine pain.[5] CBD OIL FOR SENIORS WITH NEURODEGENERATIVE DISORDERS CBD can reduce inflammation, and that includes inflammation in the brain. On top of that, it has antioxidant properties, can prevent neurodegeneration by reducing cell death, and may even encourage neurogenesis (the process of forming new neurons in the brain).[6] Additionally, animal studies have found that activating cannabinoid receptors in the brain can increase blood flow to that area. These neuroprotective properties make CBD oil a potential option to help treat neurodegenerative disorders like: Dementia Alzheimer’s Parkinson’s Glaucoma CBD OIL FOR SENIORS WITH CARDIOVASCULAR ISSUES Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a common issue among seniors. CBD’s anti-inflammatory effects can help curb the development of such cardiovascular issues by reducing the irritation your blood vessels can experience from sustained inflammation. Studies have also found that CBD’s anti-anxiety effects can help reduce blood pressure in the face of acute stress. Plus, its vasodilatory (widening of blood vessels) and antioxidant properties can help with blood flow and protect your heart against free radicals.[7] While most studies have been done on CBD’s effects against acute stress, more research still needs to be done on CBD’s effects on blood pressure when the subject is not facing stress. Another area CBD oil may be able to help seniors is with strokes. Heart disease can increase your risk of stroke, and one review found that CBD can help protect stroke victims from brain damage and may even aid in recovery by enhancing brain function.[8] https://terryshp.com/full-spectrum-cbd-products.html SUMMARY CBD oil, and in particular full- and whole-spectrum CBD oil, is continuing to show promise as a potential treatment option for a variety of ailments. Research is ongoing, but here’s what we know about CBD oil for seniors so far: While CBD isolate is an option, studies are showing that using a full- or whole-spectrum CBD oil can offer more complete relief. When it comes to seniors with pain, CBD oil has shown promise as an effective reliever of both chronic and acute pain through its anti-inflammatory properties. CBD has antioxidant properties, can prevent neurodegeneration by reducing cell death, and may even encourage neurogenesis. These benefits point to CBD oil being able to potentially help with issues like dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and glaucoma. CBD’s anti-anxiety effects make it an excellent option to reduce blood pressure when facing acute stress. Additionally, its vasodilatory (widening of blood vessels) and antioxidant properties can help with blood flow and protect your heart against free radicals, making it a potential treatment option for cardiovascular issues. Studies have also found that CBD can help protect stroke victims from brain damage and may even aid in recovery by enhancing brain function. It’s important to note that CBD and cannabis’s other active compounds can interact with other medications, so you should always speak with your doctor before trying CBD oil. Once they give the go-ahead, consider a whole-spectrum CBD oil over your other options. Maintaining the plant’s full profile, it offers you a more synergistic approach to relief. Choosing this natural option over potentially harmful pharmaceuticals may be just the switch you need! https://terryshp.com/full-spectrum-cbd-products.html SOURCES https://www.carolinahempcompany.com/blogs/education/cbd-oil-for-seniors-3-things-you-need-to-know?_ke=eyJrbF9lbWFpbCI6ICJ0ZXJyeXNoZWFsdGhwcm9kdWN0c0B5YWhvby5jb20iLCAia2xfY29tcGFueV9pZCI6ICJNdGhmdWkifQ%3D%3D https://n.neurology.org/content/90/15_Supplement/S53.004 https://creakyjoints.org/alternative-medicine/thc-vs-cbd-for-pain-relief/ https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4851925/ https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/treatment/cam/hp/cannabis-pdq https://www.healthline.com/health/migraine/cbd-oil-for-migraines https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5289988/ https://dailycbd.com/en/best-cbd/heart-disease/ https://www.mdpi.com/1424-8247/3/7/2197 If I switch cleansers watch out....I will have days of irritated skin with breakouts in my t-zone. That has always made me very cautious of the type of products that i use on my face and I tended to avoid anything oil based because of it. When I started doing research and then eventually started a hemp company I realized that hemp seed oil is one of the best moisturizers one could use on their skin. I gave it a shot and slathered my whole face with this beautiful green oil. Then I waited....after a few minutes it soaked in really well. But lets give it a few days, I will for sure have the expected break outs, right? Nope...nothing, just smoother, softer feeling and looking skin. I have consistently been using hemp seed oil on my face for 2 years and my fine lines are less, it has balanced out my normal oil production so I have less oily skin than I did and it balanced out the dry patches on my cheeks. -Lonna Brooks CEO Peace Garden Hemp Why does this work so well and what are the benefits to using hemp seed oil on the skin? There are a number of skin care benefits that you can get from using hempseed oil, either topically or by consuming it. Moderates oil production Hemp oil is perfect for most skin types as it can moisturize without clogging your pores. It can even help to balance out oily skin, hydrating it and regulating the skin’s oil production. Dryness can also cause your skin to overproduce oil, which in turn, can stimulate acne. Hemp oil can prevent dry skin without clogging pores. This helps reduce acne that’s caused by excess oil. Moisturizes and soothes inflammation One of the omega-6 fatty acids that hemp oil contains is gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), which acts as a powerful anti-inflammatory while simultaneously encouraging skin growth and new cell generation. This can help to calm inflammation and irritation on the skin, including acne and some conditions like psoriasis, while keeping the skin nourished and moisturized. Treats atopic dermatitis Part of what makes hempseed oil so beneficial to the skin is that it’s rich in omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids. Consuming these nutrients can help to treat skin conditions like atopic dermatitis. One randomized, single-blind crossover study found evidence that dietary hempseed oil reduced the symptoms and appearance of clinical atopic dermatitis after 20 weeks. Has anti-aging properties In addition to moisturizing and soothing the skin, hemp oil has anti-aging properties. Hemp oil can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles as well as prevent signs of aging from developing. The linoleic acid and oleic acids found in hemp oil can’t be produced by the body but can play a crucial role in skin health and anti-aging, so they’re important nutrients to add to the diet. https://www.naturalproductsinsider.com/herbs-botanicals/endocannabinoid-system-cannabinoids-and-brain-health Our Response to the Covid-19 crisis Our employees, customers and communities health and wellness has been our top concern since 1984 when we started our health food store. We want to ensure our community that we are doing everything that we can to protect them while they come in and shop for their essential health and wellness products during this uncertain time. We are following all recommended CDC guidelines for the protection of our customers and team. 1. We have installed sneeze guards throughout our store where our employees and customers are most vulnerable and stand with in 6 feet from one another. 2. We have an hourly disinfecting schedule where all common surfaces, door handles, bathrooms, carts, etc are getting wiped down and disinfected. 3. We are disinfecting our credit card keypad, counter that is frequently touched, door handles in and outside and shopping carts between each customer. After each customer we wipe those down. Our store team members are using sanitizer and washing their hands between customers. 4. Our store team has face masks provided for each of them by the store made by a local member of the care team who has been making masks for hospital workers. At this time the CDC is not requiring essential workers to wear masks, but when or if that time comes our team has them ready to go. Although not necessary we encourage our customers shopping to wear face masks if that makes them more comfortable. We are not using gloves for ringing transactions due to the great cross contamination that happens when gloves are not properly used or or disposed of between customers or touching any surface. CDC suggests that only health care personal use them and to not create more shortage for their needs. To properly use gloves we would need to throw them away after every single customer transaction and that seems very wasteful and unnecessary. Instead the team is properly disinfecting their hands and washing them. We ask our customers to do the same and have provided hand sanitizer at the counter and they are welcome to use our public bathroom as well to wash. 5. We have applied social distancing floor decals to gently remind customers and team members to keep a safe distance from one another while still providing exceptional customer service. We kindly ask our customers to respect the space of other people including our employees. 6. We are still open to the public, however we are limiting the number of guests in the store at one time. With our 3000 square foot store our limit is 15 people in the given space. Which allows for 5 people for every 1000 square feet. Including our employees. We are also asking any customers that are experiencing any symptoms similar to COVID-19 symptoms to please refrain from coming into the store and to allow us to assist you in another way. This also includes bringing in unnecessary traffic into the store. When possible we ask that parents not bring children in and try to limit one family member at a time. We typically love our guests to spend as much time in the store as necessary and possible. We want people to browse and look around, however during this time was ask people to make quick purchases, in and out. There will be a time that we can leisurely shop again, but we just are not there yet. 7. We have curb side carry out, shipping and local delivery free of charge for anyone that is uncomfortable coming into our public space. We also have select items including our Peace Garden Hemp CBD brand available on our website www.terryshp.com 8. Although not required, we are asking customers to limit use of cash and checks and to use credit or debit whenever possible. Credit card readers are much easier to disinfect than paper cash and coin. 9. We have asked that personal shopping bags brought from home not be used or brought into the store. We have other boxes and paper bags for recyclable options. We have also eliminated anything that could be opened or shared, such as our testers of any product, our spice and herb jars are only to be opened by employees assisting etc. 10. Our Health Squad team members are an essential part of getting these necessary items to our customers for their health needs. Because we value our employees and the incredible job they do we have implemented what we call Hero Pay. We have increased the hourly salary for all of our employees based on the current situation. Other things we have done behind the scenes: We removed chairs so that only one member of our team can sit at our small break tables at a time to encourage them to social distance. We have asked that all personal items be kept in their vehicle and what has to be brought in be kept in their lockers at all times. Our team members with longer hair, we have asked that they please keep it pulled back to discourage face touching. No drinks on our sales floor. Our team works very close together so we have asked them to remember to please practice social distancing with each other. We have had discussions with everyone on our team that anything they do in their personal life could affect their teammates at the store. So we have asked everyone to respect the same measures in their personal lives that we are taking at the store. Travel, gatherings, disinfecting, making smart decisions. We are evaluating the situation on a daily basis to make the determination what is in the best interest of our community and store team. We will continue to take these precautions and do what ever is necessary for our customers and their health needs. We want our customers to continue to have access to the health and wellness and specialty grocery items that so many need for their health. Thank you for supporting us through this time, we greatly appreciate it and cant wait to see everyone again soon! The warm weather has arrived and its time to throw open the windows and get started on what you have been dreading! But wait, you have already started, just by opening your windows! Inside air is far more polluted than outside air! On a nice sunny day open your windows and let that fresh air in. Sunshine through windows can kill bacteria that live in dust! Stop dirt at the front door mat, how bad is it? Clean it up, or pick out a new fun one! It has been outside all winter along with who knows what. Its the first way to reduce the amount of dirt, pesticides and other pollutants from getting in your home. What you clean your home with is as important as how you clean your home. Be picky about your cleaning products! Avoid harmful products, and be an ingredient detective! Make your own or find a good non toxic brand that you like. Mr Green products are my personal favorite. They are non toxic, they smell wonderful, (essential oils) and best of all they work! Clean your fans, all of them! All ceiling fans and exhaust fans(bathroom, stove) spread dirt and germs. Take down and scrub or put in the dishwasher. Here's one many of you may miss. De-gunking faucet aerators and shower heads. If you look closely, there's all that black stuff. Not a pretty thing, mildew isn't what you want while taking a shower or washing your face and hands. Here's how to remove it; Unscrew the aerators, sink sprayer and shower heads and give them a bath in a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Soak for 1-2 hours and scrub free and rinse. Last but not least! Toilet bowl scrubbers. After 1 year, throw them away. They are not that expensive but they sure hold horrible germs and bacteria. Need I say more? Happy Spring Everyone!
